Why I Started a Marketing Agency for Flooring Businesses (The Raw Reality)

I want to give you guys the raw reality of why I started a specialized “SMMA” for flooring business and my personal journey. How I went from thinking online business was a scam – to doing it full time.

What is a “SMMA” (Social Media Marketing Agency)

Social media marketing is the skill of capturing attention on social media, then holding and manipulating it, until it turns into revenue for a business.

- La'myris Moore

This is not the first business I tried to start. I failed at a bunch of other businesses before this:

  • Dropshipping

  • Amazon

  • Ebay

  • Sneaker reselling

  • Shopify

  • Clothing brands

and the list goes on.

I kept exploring different ways to make money online because I knew that going to college or working a regular job wasnt for me. But eventually I did have to get a regular job.

I worked at a medical warehouse driving forklifts for 2 years – I hated every second of it, but I never stopped exploring new ways to make money.

Eventually I came across social media marketing and I was hooked. This is going to be my next business.

There are 5.17 billion social media users globally. Over 63% of the global population is on Social media and Facebook is the biggest social media platform, with over 3.05 billion users. – demandsage.com

To me, social media marketing was a clear opportunity to learn a high income skill – that's clearly in demand.

Why I Work With Flooring Businesses

Growing up I used to work with my dad inside his flooring businesses. This was our family's business.

He was able to make over 100k a year and provide me and my two sisters with an amazing childhood. This business paid for christmases, birthdays, vacations, school supplies, everything.

I never tried super hard in school or sports because I believed that if everything else fails I could always just go work for my dad and eventually he would pass the business down to me. .

Turns out, my dad was running the business sloppy:

  • He would rely on his network of past clients, general contractors and word of mouth.

  • He had no way of getting work from people that were outside of his network (So when his phone stopped ringing, he stopped working).

  • He was unable to maintain profit margins to pay his team, loans on equipment and other business expenses

So he had to shut the business down.

All because he didn't have a way to bring in work to his business.

When I found out that social media marketing could help other flooring guys get work for their business, the decision to work with flooring guys was just a no brainer.

Getting started

So now I knew what business I wanted to start and who I was going to help. Now it was time to actually learn the skill.

After doing research on which marketing platform to learn, like youtube, tiktok, facebook, ect. I found out it didn't make that big of a difference because the whole purpose is just to take attention off the platform and drive it to a business.

I already had some experience with running facebook ads because of that clothing brand I had tried to start. So I went with facebook.

Now it was time to learn:

  • I took a free course on social media marketing and laid the foundation of my business.

  • I ran my own paid ads for my business to get a proof of concept, see if it really worked and if I could help other people.

  • I had flooring guys messaging me, wanting to learn more about what I did.

  • I went over what I did with a few business owners

  • I landed my first client.

Turns out It works.

By this point I had learned

  • how to make a good offer

  • how to run facebook ads

  • how to build websites

  • how to follow up with leads

  • how to sell.

If you are an agency owner reading this and you're still doing cold outreach, I teach how to do all of this inside my program. Shoot me a DM on instagram

I know I'm making it sound easy but this whole process was extremely hard.

After learning all that, now all I had to do was do it again for my client.

Getting results

The first month, I was able to get him 27 leads, all inbound, without him having to rely on flyers, business cards or anyone else. On average he paid about $15 bucks per lead.

He was very happy with the results but he was even more happy to just be back working again because before he reached out to me, he had been out of work for a month or two.

It's crazy because I used to think online business was a scam. Because growing up my parents would always tell me to never give out my information online and never click on links because I could get scammed or my computer could get a virus.

All of this advice really subconsciously scared me away from doing business online.

Now I do this full time and it gets easier with time.

I used to think “ads don't work small businesses, only big corporations like Walmart or McDonalds can really run ads and make money.”

It wasn't until I was willing to take a risk on the future I wanted and put all my trust in God, until I found out for myself.

Investing that money in the beginning to get exposure onto my business was the best decision I couldve made.

Getting over limiting beliefs

For anyone who's on the fence about investing in their business or running paid ads.

Whether you're an agency owner like me or a flooring business owner like my dad. I was scared to run ads for my business at first as well.

I didn't know what I was getting myself into, all I knew was that I couldn't keep doing the same old things that I was doing.

After running ads and fighting the erg to turn them off after the first week, I started to get more eyeballs on my service and my ideal customers started to reach out to me. Before I knew it. I was taking calls and closing deals.

Most people quit ads before they see the result.

That's why you hear horror stories about buying things online like courses or marketing.

So my advice to you is to stay in the game until you win.

Stay in the game until you win

The hardest part of making money in the new economy is staying in the activity long enough to become the person who can do the thing. - Myron Golden

And this is the truth.

Most people quit the online business scene before they become the person that can make it work.

Then they leave bitter and hopeless as they go back to doing what was comfortable.

The people who find out how to make online business actually work, really make it work and make the most money.

So center your focus on making it work until it works.

Because what else are you going to do?

Just start

  • Use feedback from real-world data and your experiences

  • Iterate until you peak the attention of your ideal customers

  • Drive this new online attention to your services and your business

  • Focus on getting better at the service you provide so you have an even better offer to bring to market

  • Repeat this process and scale with time

You have a valuable service

But the problem other people dont know the value in your service yet

Its easy to get frustrated and feel like:

“people only want cheap work”

“no one can afford my services”

The truth is its our responsibility to communicate or value to the people that we know we can help. Its our fault.

So just start, Run the Ad, Get the exposer

Let your ads run. The algorithm will do its thing.

  • Overcome the erg to turn your ad off and go back to what is comfortable

  • Ads perform better with time

  • Algorithms learn what kind of people resonate with your ad

  • Platforms are incentivised to get you leads.

  • More leads = Higher Ad spend
